My Platform

For 80 years, the Southern University Alumni Federation has promoted the welfare of the Southern University System and its mission. It gives me great pleasure to vie for SUAF Historian, a critical office on the executive board.

Over the past 13 years as a member of SUAF, I have served in various capacities on the chapter and national level. I welcome the opportunity to continue to build brand awareness and the affinity of the organization.  As historian, I will collaborate with my fellow executive board members to curate a strategy that will increase overall alumni engagement nationally. I am vying for SUAF historian also because a vital function of the office is the preservation of historical facts & data - we have the tools to help our chapters run efficiently and effectively while embracing technology. Recognition of our members and chapters driven by data will lead SUAF towards another 80 years of serving, supporting, and strengthening Southern University.

SUAF’s rich history shared with the masses and preserved for future generations via social media platforms and traditional publications will be another priority – content creation has taken over. We must tell our story! My aim as historian will be to increase SUAF’s use of technology and embrace content creation to engage and preserve our alumni base.

My Story

Hailing from the historic city of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, my connections to Southern University run deep. Donaldsonville natives include the first dean of the institution, John S. Jones, namesake to the storied freshmen men’s dormitory, J. S. Jones Hall (aka Old Jones, demolished 2020) and father to Ralph Emerson Jones, second President of Grambling State University, and Governor Francis T. Nichols, who signed Act 87 into law, establishing Southern University in 1880. I discovered these little-known facts (post undergrad) through my quiet time and casual reading of Southern University history, coupled with my interest of general history. Donaldsonville is home to a host of Southern University graduates.

Attending Southern is a family tradition. I am one of many family members who have matriculated or is currently experiencing Scott’s Bluff. My first introduction to Southern University was one summer traveling with my Tee Linda (SU Education ’75) to drop off my cousin Lindsay (SU Engineering ‘05) who would be attending a SU summer enrichment program. I candidly remember crossing the hump and gasping as we passed Lacumba II, Southern’s live jaguar. Little did I know, this summer trip would be the spark of my love affair with Southern University and A&M College.
